Set hardcore=true in server.properties to enable Hardcore behavior. Create a backup first because player death has lasting consequences.

Create a backup

Back up the server before changing Hardcore mode.

Stop the server

Wait for the server to shut down cleanly.

Edit the property

Open server.properties and set:

Restart and verify

Save the file, start the server, and confirm the setting before inviting players.
To disable Hardcore behavior, repeat the procedure with hardcore=false.
Disabling Hardcore mode does not automatically restore a dead player’s inventory, position, or previous game mode. Restore a backup if you need to reverse world and player changes caused by a death.
